A Sponge For Some Drugs......

a: Antibody ~
b: sponge

What: "The antibody is like a sponge," says Kim Janda, a professor of chemistry and immunology at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. "The drug comes in and it's soaked up, and you try to soak up as much as you can before it crosses the blood-brain barrier." This article discusses antibodies made in a laboratory to bind to addictive drugs. This is in contrast to antibodies made by the human body which are used to detect and destroy foreign organism within the body. They have similar chemistry, but their origin and function are different.
